Residents urged to support "Rec" plans

05/04/2022 @ 09:24
Local residents are being urged to get involved in plans to build new changing room facilities at Newtown's Recreation Ground.

The sound is home to Newtown Rugby, cricket and tennis clubs and together they form Newtown Sports Club.

Sport club leaders and local politicians are supporting proposals to build new changing room facilities to enable the clubs to grow.

Outline plans and indicative costings have been prepared and the next phase of the project is now underway with a consultation with the community to ensure the plans eventually adopted best reflect the needs of the local population and to ensure the project moves forward through the planning process.

The proposals incorporate carbon neutral construction methods and green energy sources.

Montgomeryshire MS, Russell George has encouraged people to show their support by completing the community consultation.

These proposals also have the support of Newtown Town Council which unanimously supported a motion that was put forward by Newtown Town Councillor, Pete Lewington.

Commenting on the scheme, Mr George said: "It's fantastic to see the scheme being proposed by the Newtown Sports Club.

“I have visited the facilities myself, and the existing changing rooms fall well below modern expectations. A new fit for purpose facility is needed to enable the clubs to grow and encourage wider sporting events and participation”

‘’I hope there will be strong community support the proposals to help move the scheme forward”

Newtown Cllr Pete Lewington said: "I was pleased that the town council supported a motion I brought forward, and I hope the club can now begin their journey to eventually seeing the new facilities being built.

"It's important that engagement takes place with the Newtown community, and I think this will be a real benefit to the town and wider area."

Speaking of behalf of Newtown Sport Club, Mark Lloyd said: "We have already received huge support for the scheme, it’s an important project and one that upgrades our community facilities to support local people.

"The survey runs until the 9th May and I am encouraging residents to get involved with the survey. Upgrading changing rooms will benefit not only people that are members of the club, but also visitors and the wider community."

You can find the survey by visiting the club's website and Facebook pages or by following this link:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSclUI9DZ9CWI6pRZqtBxxsMJwconSyy71OwXGEVQbbMRr1hTg/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1&flr=0

The survey is now available and will be able to be completed up to the 9th May. Paper surveys can be obtained at Newtown library, and from MMP Estate agents on broad street.
