Housing development to be renamed

A suggested name for the development of 18 affordable homes at the former Red Dragon pub site has had to be changed.

Powys County Council has told Newtown Town Council that the suggested street name for the development at Plantation Lane, Maesyrhandir was Swift Court - Cwrt Y Wennol and Red Dragon Close. The homes are being built for the county council.

But the county council has told the council and developer that a number of people have said Swift Close sounds too similar to a nearby road and would be confusing.

In a letter to the town council, it states: "Further to my previous correspondence, we have since had questions regarding the suggested name of Swift Court and its translation Cwrt Y Wennol being similar to a nearby street name.

"Red Dragon Close will be unaffected and officially named in due course. The developer has suggested the following names to replace Swift Court: Cwrt Glas Y Dorlan (Kingfisher Court) or Cwrt Y Dryw (Wren Court)."

Town councillors will consider the names at their full meeting on Monday when they will make comments.
