Worrying number of residents unable to get a Covid Pass

17/01/2022 @ 12:05
Many people living in Newtown are unable to get Covid passes because they have received vaccinations in other parts of the country or abroad.

Montgomeryshire's Member of the Senedd, Russell George, has called on the Welsh Government to take urgent action. He warned that many local people could face being unable to access certain services and locations if they do not have a valid Covid pass.

"One man received the Janssen Jab whilst in France which requires only one jab to be classed as fully vaccinated. However, the NHS Wales app is only showing Pfizer one of two on his Digital Vaccine Pass," said Mr George.

"The constituent is booked to have his booster in Newtown, therefore due to having a different jab, it won't show that he is fully vaccinated on his pass. The constituent has said that this will severely affect him due to the nature of his job."

Mr George, who is also Shadow Health Minister at the Welsh Assembly, added: "A further example is of a constituent who recently moved from Montgomeryshire to Scotland. This person had his first Covid vaccine in Newtown, April 2021 and his second vaccine in Edinburgh, June 2021.

"The gentleman in question is trying to obtain certification of his 1st Vaccine which he had in Wales, but the present system doesn’t offer the facility to prove his one Vaccine Jab. I understand certificates proving one dose are issued in Scotland."

Other people across Wales have also experienced difficulties with proving their vaccination status when having their jabs in different countries.

Other UK nations have taken action to ensure residents who had their jabs abroad are able to access a COVID pass and booster jab – but Wales are still lagging behind.

Mr George is calling for the health minister Baroness Eluned Morgan to step in and work with health officials and the constituents to solve the frustrating problem.

He said: “I cannot even begin to imagine how frustrating this must be for the people affected. Through no fault of their own, they are being penalised.

“For people who have had their jabs in a different part of the UK or another country, this is very frustrating as the NHS Wales app is not showing them to be fully vaccinated, this is extremely inconvenient and frustrating for the individual and it is because the NHS Wales app is lagging behind other UK nations – and that’s unacceptable. I first took this issue up with the minister back in November.

“Vaccines are the number one defence in our fight against coronavirus and with efforts being ramped up in light of the omicron variant, it is imperative officials act quickly to make sure everyone is able to get their jabs, and the details are correctly reported."
