25/08/2011 @ 08:12

Up to 29 firefighters have been tackling a barn blaze near Trefeglwys, Caersws yesterday and overnight after a farmer reported 200 tonnes of hay ablaze.

The fire at Cefn Barach was reported to the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service at 6.35am on Thursday. Crews from Llanidloes and Newtown and a specialist unit from Builth Wells were sent to the fire in a barn measuring 14 metres by 15 metres. According to fire officials, the barn was well alight.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus to get near the blaze and have used a mechanical digger and pitch forks.

Plumes of smoke could be seen from miles around as firefighters remained at the scene overnight to dampen it down and monitor the situation.
