Plans for Newtown's Christmas celebrations have been revealed, including the annual shop window competitions and a festive market.

The Mayor of Newtown, Cllr Richard Williams, has written to businesses in the town confirming arrangements.

He said the Christmas lights would start to be erected over the next few days in the lead up to the switching on of them on 27 November.

"Kicking off Christmas - Christmas Lights Switch on: The erection of the Christmas Lights will shortly be starting, and as with previous years all the main parts of town will be lit and the main shopping streets will have a Christmas sparkle as they always have," he said.

"This year the main Christmas Lights Event will be on Saturday, 27th November 2021. The main event this year will be held in the Town Hall Grounds in conjunction with Alliance Theatre, with a Christmas themed light and projection show being cast onto the Town Hall building.

"The evening will also see the return of the Christmas Market held in Bear Lanes, where we invite small businesses, charities, and organisations to hold a stall on the evening."

He invited local businesses to take part in the Christmas Windows Competition.

"I am hoping that all local shops and businesses in town will take part in a Christmas window decorating competition to help brighten up the town and encourage local shoppers.

"The theme this year will be Christmas Celebrations – an opportunity to showcase your locally produced and available goods in a Christmas setting. Judging of the competition will take place on Saturday, 27th November 2021.

"Certificates will be issued to winning windows at the beginning of the following week, with an opportunity for photos and publicity. Publicity will also be arranged in the next few weeks to encourage local shopping and supporting local businesses."
