Global Day of Action planned in Newtown

28/10/2021 @ 12:55
A series of events are to be staged in Newtown next week highlighting climate change and the international COP26 summit.

Cyclists and marchers from Climate Action Newtown will descend on the town centre on Saturday, 6 November to hand over a petition to MP Craig Williams and MS Russell George calling on the UK and Welsh governments to take more ambitious actions to reduce greenhouse emissions and to end all fossil fuel subsidies and exploration.

"This day is halfway through the global climate summit in Glasgow where world leaders, under the leadership of the UK Government, are meeting to accelerate progress towards net zero emissions," said Stephen Hughes of CAN.

"There will be a short march through town and a bike convoy. Cyclists will start from Bike to the Future, located at Pen Dinas Community Garden, near the College, at 9.30am.

"Walkers will start from the Town Park outside Oriel Davies at 10.00am. Bikers and marchers will meet up on the wide pavement on High Street, near the Cross, at 10.30am where a petition will be handed to our Member of Parliament and our Members of the Senedd.

"Anyone is welcome to join the bike convoy or the march, subject to maintaining social distancing guidelines. All those attending any of the events are encouraged to wear masks.

From 10.30am to midday there will be an information desk inside Bear Lanes (near the High Street entrance), where people can find out more about local climate action, about e-bikes, household energy efficiency, and the new electric car club in Newtown.

There will also be an exhibition of children’s artwork organised by One Planet Newtown, in the window of the empty Club Sports shop on Broad Street.
