Five homes needed for pilot energy scheme

23/07/2021 @ 08:49
Homeowners in Newtown are being offered the chance to take part in a pilot initiative to have their properties made more energy efficient.

Open Newtown has obtained funding to see how the carbon footprint of Newtown could be cut by making homes more energy efficient.

They are looking g for five homes to take part in the scheme.

"The need to cut carbon emissions is becoming more urgent, and one source of carbon emissions is our heating and powering our homes. To meet the UKs carbon target, almost every house in Newtown will need to have a very significant energy upgrade over the next few years," said Jeremy Thorp of Open Newtown who is leading on the project.

"Finding good advice on how to do so is hard. Open Newtown have been running a project called Open Energy to investigated how we can make our homes more energy efficient.

"We have obtained some funding to study a small number of houses in detail in Newtown, to find out what would be the most effective way to get these houses as close to net zero carbon as possible, what this would cost and how to go about getting these improvements made."

He added: "We are looking for 5 houses in Newtown to be part of this study. We are looking for a spread of different house types, and ones that are representative of other similar ones in the town. We would carry out a full energy audit of these houses (worth about £500) and prepare a detailed report on the options. We can only provide advice, we cannot fund any capital measures."

If you would like a chance to take part, contact Jeremy@opennewtown.org.uk by 1 August.

"We only have funds to audit five houses and will select those where the results will be most useful to share with others," said Mr Thorp.

"You would need to be willing for us to use information contained in the report to share, but this would be anonymised, and we would not share names and addresses.

"Our aim is to raise awareness of the options, and costs and benefits of retrofitting your home, to encourage more people to consider this option."

To qualify you need to be an owner/occupier and the house has to be within the town. We cannot offer these to anyone with a direct connection to Open Newtown.

The reports will be carried out using the new methodology known as “PAS2035”. This is a new process, being adopted by both the UK and Welsh government to ensure that home energy advice is rigorous and reliable. You can find out more about PAS2035 by searching for this term online.

The surveys and advice which will be delivered by Carbon Coop, based in Manchester. You can find or more about Carbon Coop at https://carbon.coop/
