A project creating hay meadows in the area has appointed a co-ordinator.

Zero Carbon Llanidloes has appointed Humphrey Wells manager of its ‘Gwneud Gwair Cymreig / Making Welsh Hay’ project.

Zero Carbon Llanidloes (ZCLl) was set up about 18 months ago to promote policies towards net zero carbon.

"ZCLl is delighted to have appointed Humphrey Wells, a farmer experienced in regenerative agriculture & hay meadow management, to the part time project manager post of the ‘Gwneud Gwair Cymreig / Making Welsh Hay’ project," said a spokesperson.

"Until recently, Humphrey was the farm manager on a large organic beef, dairy and arable farm in Oxfordshire but, together with his wife, he has now taken up the tenancy of her parents’ farm near Hay on Wye."

He started work on Gwneud Gwair Cymreig/Making Welsh Hay in July, initially for 18 months.

The project is funded by the Landfill Disposal Tax Community Scheme, administered by the Welsh Council for Voluntary Action. The first phase will see 3 meadows start the process of conversion from grass pasture to biodiverse hay meadows, with great benefits for wildlife & community involvement.

ZCLl is seeking further funding to extend both the length and breadth of the project. If you have a field you would like to turn into a meadow, or to get involved with biodiversity surveys, exhibitions of past farming practices or other parts of the project, please contact Humphrey Wells, Zero Carbon Llanidloes, on 07341 819055 or email makingwelshhay@gmail.com.
