Health bosses are reiterating their plea for people to get tested for Covid-19 and to get their first dose of the vaccine as infection rates continue to rise in the town.

Last weekend there was a spike in infections in the town. It has resulted in one venue closing and numerous businesses affected by people having to self-isolate as a result of the rise in positive injections.

On Friday, a 'no appointment' day is being held for people who have not had their first dose of the vaccine.

It will be held at the Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

"As part of our ‘Leave no one behind’ policy on COVID vaccination, Powys Teaching Health Board will be offering a first-dose drop-in vaccination session in Newtown on Friday, 9 July," said a Powys Teaching Health Board statement.

"Anyone in Powys aged 18+ who has not yet had their first-dose of COVID vaccine can come along to the Mass Vaccination Centre at the Maldwyn Leisure Centre between 8.30am and 4.30pm to receive their vaccine.

"No appointment is needed to attend this session."
