Plans for primary school changes move forward

22/06/2021 @ 11:50
A statutory notice is to be published to change the language status of a local primary school.

Powys County Council's Cabinet has today approved the publication of the notice to change Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon at Trefeglwys to a Welsh-medium school.

It followed a consultation on the plans which ended in April.

The council has proposed to alter the language provision so that eventually it becomes a Welsh-medium education setting, ensuring that all pupils attending the school become fully bilingual in Welsh and English.

It is currently a dual-stream school providing English-medium and Welsh-medium education for pupils aged 4 to 11.

Today, the Cabinet gave the go-ahead for a statutory notice to be published formally proposing the change after receiving and considering the consultation report.

Leader of Powys County Council, Cllr Rosemarie Harris, said: “We would like to thank all those who took part in the consultation exercise for this proposal.

“By moving Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon along the language continuum, it will help us meet the aims and objectives within our Strategy for Transforming Education in Powys. It will also ensure that all pupils attending the school have the opportunity to become fully bilingual, fluent in both Welsh and English, therefore contributing to the Welsh Government’s aspiration to achieve a million Welsh speakers by 2050.”

Sue Wilcox, Chair of Governors at Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon, said: “The Governing Body will support the council in whichever decision it reaches and will work with them for benefit of the pupils of Ysgol Dyffryn Trannon, both now and in the future.”

The proposed change would be introduced on a phased basis, year-by-year, starting with Reception in September 2022. It would not affect those pupils already at the school – pupils currently accessing English-medium provision at the school would be able to continue to access this provision until they leave school.

It is anticipated that the statutory notice will be published shortly and that a further report, summarising any objections received, will be considered by Cabinet in the autumn.
