Historic tree to get 'interpretative' board

04/05/2021 @ 07:52
Information about Newtown's historic Black Poplar tree is to be placed on a dedicated interpretation board.

Newtown Town Council is expected to agree to the new board which will be positioned next to the tree in the Gravel car park.

The tree is believed to be more than 350 years old. It was third in the 2019 Wales Tree of the Year competition.

The tree was once on the Llanllwchaiarn side of the River Severn in the town. When flood defence work was undertaken in the 1960s the river was re-routed around it and the tree moved to the town centre side.

The Black Poplar is one of Britain’s rarest and most endangered native species, fighting fungal disease, leaf rusts and poplar scab.

Town councillors are expected to agree to the information board being purchased and placed by the tree so more people can know about its history.
