The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an independent investigation into Sunday evening's fatal road accident on the Newtown bypass, it has been revealed.

The independent watchdog has confirmed its involvement after it said Dyfed Powys Police had received a call before the accidents about a 36-year-old man's welfare before he died in the accident. A marked police car was in the area at the time of the accident.

In a statement, the IOPC said:  "We have begun an independent investigation following a fatal road traffic incident near Newtown, Powys on Sunday evening (April 25).

"At just after 6.30pm a van on the A489 Newtown Bypass collided with a lorry. The driver of the van, a 36-year-old man, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

"We understand Dyfed-Powys Police had received a call shortly before expressing concern for the man’s welfare, and a marked police car was in the vicinity at the time of the collision.

"After being notified of the incident by the force, we sent investigators to the scene and the post-incident procedure to start gathering information."

Dyfed Powys Police said it was fully co-operating with the IOPC.

The dead man has been named locally, but police have yet to formally name him.
