Retailers urged to ensure safety measures are in place

As more people return to Newtown's shops this week, traders are being urged to ensure they have safety measures in place to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Non-essential shops in the area re-opened on Monday. Traders have urged residents to use local businesses where they can following the latest lockdown.

Powys County Council has urged all businesses to ensure they have safety measures in place.

Businesses are still required by law to ensure the appropriate measures, such as social distancing and the use of suitable PPE, are maintained.

Where possible, businesses should also seek to improve the airflow in enclosed spaces to reduce virus circulation.

The council said it will work with businesses and communities throughout the reopening period to ensure the correct safeguards are in place.

Due to the prolonged closure period, the council is also urging businesses to check their water systems for possible stagnation as a lack of use can increase the risks of Legionnaires' disease.

Gwilym Davies, Head of Property, Planning and Public Protection, said: “It’s great to see so many businesses back up and running again, but the safety of those around us must stay at the forefront of all our minds.

“Despite the easing of lockdown and a decline in Covid cases we are not out of the woods yet and the virus remains a threat.

“We acknowledge that the vast amount of Powys businesses make every effort to keep customers safe and we are truly grateful for this.

“Our Public Protection Team are here to help first and foremost, so businesses should not hesitate to get in touch if they need some assistance.

Using enforcement action is always a last resort, but where non-compliance persists we will issue improvement and closure notices if the situation requires it.”
