Tributes have been paid to HRH The Duke Of Edinburgh by Newtown Town Council following his death today.

The Mayor, Cllr David Selby, said: “The Town Council, on behalf of the residents of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at this sad time.”

In a message, the council said: "Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council wish to express our great sadness following the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. On behalf of the people of Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to HM the Queen and The Royal family at this sad time.

"During his lifetime, the Duke of Edinburgh was involved in over 750 organisations, reflecting his wide range of interests but specifically those in scientific and technological research.

"However, he will probably be best remembered for founding The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. An award which has inspired millions of young people to become actively involved within their communities, experience adventure and develop new skills outside of the classroom."

It added: "The Duke of Edinburgh played a prominent part in many aspects of Royal life and was dedicated to his role of British consort to Queen Elizabeth II. His Royal Highness will be fondly remembered for his outstanding contribution to the Royal Family, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."
