Landowners still waiting for bypass payments

Claims have been made that the Welsh Government is yet to settle some payments for land use for the Newtown bypass.

Powys county councillor and Plaid Cymru Senedd candidate, Elwyn Vaughan, has said a number of landowners are still awaiting financial settlement. He also believes issues over drainage and 'damage' to property are yet to be sorted.

The £95 million bypass was opened just over two years ago.

“Two years ago Newtown bypass was opened after much expectation, however, it is totally ridiculous that landowners and some property owners are still awaiting payment for land taken to build the road.

"How can this be just and fair? In what other situation would someone lose their property yet wait for years to get paid for it.

"It’s causing stress and strain on many families and it’s hypocritical to talk about the importance of mental health within the farming community whilst putting such pressure on them."

He said he had held meetings with some of the residents and landowners and would be taking it up with the regional AM, Helen Mary-Jones.

Mr Vaughan added: "Residents and neighbours of the road showed a great deal of goodwill during the construction process, a similar goodwill should now be shown by Welsh Government to those affected by the road.”
