Council confirms no cuts to waste collections

Kerbside waste collection in the area will not be reduced to once a month, Powys County Council has said.
A report to councillors had suggested cutting waste recycling to help save money.
But the county council has confirmed that there are no immediate plans to make changes to the frequency of the waste and recycling kerbside collection service.
Currently, all households in Powys receive weekly recycling collections and three-weekly collections of rubbish. An additional fortnightly collection of garden waste is available to subscribers.
As part of the annual budget setting process, a proposal for changes to collections was put forward, along with many other options from across the council. But after consideration it was decided that no changes would be made to the service at this time.
“Despite budget pressures, it was agreed that with the current coronavirus restrictions in place, with more of us staying home, it would not be the best time to alter the frequency of the kerbside residual waste collections.” Explains Cllr Heulwen Hulme, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling.
“However, the current Welsh Government waste strategy ‘Towards Zero Waste’, which charts a path to zero waste by 2050, very clearly identifies the need for us to all be recycling more and wasting less. By 2025 we must hit a county-wide recycling rate of 70% and for every percentage point below that target, we can expect to receive a £100,000 fine.
“The pandemic has been hard for us all. We have had to all adapt to a different way of life and cope as best we can with the situation.
"With us all staying at home, whilst there has been an increase in recycling from the kerbside we have also seen a 15% increase in rubbish going into the wheeled bins and purple sacks this year, and although we totally understand why, we would like to remind residents to make a concerted effort to recycle as much as possible and reduce the amount of waste they throw away.”
