Bridge work will start once legals are completed

Work on a new £500,000 bridge across the River Severn in Newtown will begin once legal agreements over ownership of land are agreed, it has been revealed.

Powys County Council fanfare the new cycling and pedestrian bridge more than two years ago, but nothing has happened since.

The bridge will cross from Pool Road, near to the council depot and cemetery, and Lower Canal Road, close to the old woollen mill.

It will create a link with the existing cycling routes around Newtown.

However, it is understood the council has been involved in lengthy negotiations over land.

Cllr Elwyn Vaughan questioned what was happening to the Heads of Service. He was concerned the money for the bridge, provided by the Welsh Government, could run out if not spent.

"Following the securing of £500k of Welsh Government Active Travel funding for a new bridge in Newtown in 2019, can we have a update of its development in light of lack of progress to date, including confirmation by when does the money have to be spent," he said.

A response from the Heads of Service said: "I appreciate this has been ongoing for some time, but I can give you assurance that we are just finalising agreements with our internal legal team and the clients land agents.

"Once these are signed by both parties, we will then be commencing works."
