Concern over dog attacks in Newtown

08/02/2021 @ 09:23

Action is needed to ensure dog owners in Newtown keep their pets under control in public areas in the town, it is claimed.

The matter will be discussed by town councillors tonight (Monday) after one councillor said his dog had been attacked by another dog.

A motion has been put forward by Cllr J Byrne.

"This motion is to cover the issue of dogs in public areas not being on a lead or under control by their owners. This councillor, along with others in Newtown, has had their dogs attacked by other dogs not under the control of the owner and not on a lead," it states.

Cllr Byrne will propose the motion at the Services Committee to be held via video conference.

The motion states: "This Committee is of the opinion that signage and other lawful and appropriate means of supporting dog owners to keep their dogs under control is needed around town council services and projects especially Children’s Play Areas, and the BMX and Mountain Bike Tracks and also at the new Riverside Venue and the associated river activities that are planned to take place."

Councillors will discuss the motion before voting on whether to pass it.
