Extra police recruited for the area, claims MP

Dyfed-Powys Police has been bolstered by an additional 27 officers, according to Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams.

Mr Williams highlighted the increase as part of the UK Government’s major police recruitment drive which was launched one year ago which has encouraged 6,620 extra officers to join police forces across England and Wales.

He said the new officers bring the total number across Dyfed-Powys to 1,163.

The Conservative Government made a manifesto commitment of recruiting 20,000 extra officers by 2023, with its target of recruiting 6,000 new officers by March 2021 seemingly ahead of schedule.

“Recruiting more police officers to patrol our streets and communities is a priority for many people, and I am delighted that in just over one year the UK Government has already delivered on its promise,” said Mr Williams.

“The rural location and geographical size of the Dyfed-Powys Force’s area brings its own unique challenges, and every one of these newly recruited officers will make an enormous difference in helping to cut crime and keep all Montgomeryshire residents safe. I know also that many more officers will follow as the UK Government continues to deliver on its promise to recruit 20,000 more officers over the next three years.”

Mr Williams also said the Government has announced the second round of their Safer Streets Fund, backed by £20 million of new money, to crack down on neighbourhood crimes. This funding will enable PCC’s and Local Authorities to make crime cutting interventions in residential areas.

Mr Williams also highlighted a £636 million funding boost for police forces this year, bringing the total for police funding up to £15.8 billion, boosting police pay by 2.5%, equivalent to a constable receiving an extra £1,100, and enshrining a new police covenant into law, which will offer enhanced support and protection for frontline officers.
