Wellbeing and sustainability project success

A project helping link sustainability and wellbeing in Newtown has been successfully completed, according to organisers.

The Cultivate Co-operative said they have successfully completed the Where the Severn Smiles project.

The project aimed to demonstrate the link between sustainably managed green spaces and increased wellbeing through varied outdoor events and opportunities.

The project was led by Open Newtown in partnership with Cultivate Co-operative, Oriel Davies Gallery, Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, Circular Economy Mid Wales, North Powys Tennis Association and Ponthafren, working with local businesses to focus on the link between nature and wellbeing.

Richard Edwards project manager said: “It’s been particularly difficult to deliver due to Covid-19 with all of the workshops being postponed in March and April 2020 and we had only just restarted when we went into the fire break.

"However people really came together for the workshops at the end of 2020 and we have been able to plant orchards of apple, pear and plum using many Welsh heritage varieties around Newtown, a nuttery on Trehafren Hill, plus sprucing up the Town Hall flower beds with edible herbs.

"We also had two very successful Harvest Festival events at our community gardens and allotments at Pendinas. Participants enjoyed a sociable tour and a free and freshly cooked lunch using ingredients grown at the garden."

The project established an edible trail in the town.

Mr Edwards: said: "Newtown has many edible plants, shrubs and trees, some wild and some planted. The newly planted crops and plants will add value to these creating a new foraging trail to be designed alongside Walking Newtown.

"This new resource will support local people to enjoy a foraging walk enabling a wider seasonal  harvest of locally grown and FREE food on their doorstep.

"We are in the process of applying for more funding to support more people to get out, get hands on and to enjoy their green spaces once lockdown ends, so look out for more Cultivate workshops in 2021.

"The work so far has been funded through the Welsh Government’s ENRaW programme (Enabling Natural Resources and Wellbeing)."
