29/01/2021 @ 08:57
Work is about to start on a new £840,000 3G pitch in Llanidloes, with the majority of the cash being stumped up by Powys County Council.

The council said work on the pitch would start next month in conjunction with Freedom Leisure who run the town's leisure centre.

The council is paying the majority, £690,000, towards the cost, with £150,000 coming from Njord Wind Developments.

The new 3G pitch will be installed at Llanidloes Sports Centre, replacing the outdated sports pitch. As part of the works, an improved floodlighting scheme will also be installed.

Welshpool-based SWG Construction have been appointed the contractor to install the pitch and floodlights, with the work anticipated to be completed by July.

The 3G pitch will be suitable for football, hockey and a number of other outdoor sports for the community of Llanidloes and visitors to use.

Cllr Rachel Powell, Cabinet Member for Young People, Culture and Leisure, said: “This is great news for the sporting community in Llanidloes.

“This project is only possible thanks to our strong partnership with Freedom Leisure and the support of Njord Wind Developments, the developers of the Bryn Blaen Wind Farm. It demonstrates our continued commitment to provide high-quality, inclusive and fully accessible leisure facilities for all communities in Powys.”

Gwyn Owen, Area Manager, Freedom Leisure Powys said: “The 3G pitch will be key in our support for Llanidloes residents to remain as active and healthy as possible. The new facility will be a fantastic incentive to encourage outdoor activities for all as we emerge from the impact of Covid-19.”

Margot Jones, Chair of Governors at Llanidloes Schools Federation, said: “We are thankful for the support of Powys County Council, Freedom Leisure, Njord Wind Developments and the Llanidloes and District Sports Partnership for the 3G pitch development.  There is a great sense of excitement in our schools.  The pitch will be invaluable in helping us promote learners’ physical wellbeing, sporting prowess and love of the great outdoors.”
