£6 million of grants paid to local businesses

13/01/2021 @ 08:54
Businesses throughout north Powys have benefited from grant funding to help them through the current coronavirus lockdown.

Almost £6million in grant support has been awarded to Powys businesses in recent weeks, according to Powys County Council.

Around 1,800 businesses in Powys’ hospitality, leisure, retail and tourism sectors have been given a cash boost as part of the Welsh Government’s Restrictions Business Fund.

The fund aims to help businesses survive the Covid restrictions which began in December, with grants of either £3,000 or £5,000 depending on their rateable value.

To make the process easier, Powys County Council has automatically paid eligible businesses that also received the firebreak grant in October.

The only exceptions to this are caravan and camping sites. These businesses will not receive an automatic payment but will instead need to apply for the grant and evidence a 40% reduction in turnover.

If a business is unsure about whether they need to apply, the council’s online form will only allow applications which come from businesses that are yet to receive the grant.

If you cannot submit the form this means your application is not required.

There is also a discretionary element to the scheme where businesses and sole traders who are ineligible for a Non-Domestic Rates grant but have been materially impacted during the restrictions can apply for up to £2,000.

Cllr Aled Davies, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “I am pleased that just under £6million has already gone out to some of our hardest hit businesses.

“The latest restrictions have huge economic implications, particularly for our business community, so we are determined to pay the grants as quickly as possible.

“There are more payments on their way so please bear with our officers in Finance as they sort through applications and process large sums of cash.

“We have saved many businesses from having to submit a new application by making automatic payments where we can, and most of these are now complete.

“We do not want eligible businesses missing out on this opportunity so please check the council’s website for all the guidance and call us if you need further support.

“With the infection rates higher than ever, even in Powys, please keep taking this virus seriously and follow the guidance for everyone’s sake. Thank you and stay safe.”

Further information and guidance on business grants can be found on the council’s website www.powys.gov.uk/coronavirus/helpforbusinesses.
