A scheme piloted in Newtown to attract youngsters into being positive and active citizen is to be run for a second time by Dyfed-Powys Police.

The force is opening up entries for its Volunteer Cadet Scheme which was launched in Newtown in September 2009.

The two-year Training and Development Programme offers people aged 16 the opportunity to become positive and active citizens, while obtaining a valuable insight into a Police related career.

“Joining the Cadets is a great way to make new friends, get involved in exciting and challenging activities, and develop a variety of valuable skills including team building and communication skills,” said Chief Inspector Chris Curtis.

“Thanks to the success of the initiative in Powys, it has enabled us to repeat the scheme in the county and roll it out to Pembrokeshire, which highlights our commitment to youth engagement and development.

“Enthusiasm is essential, as is the willingness to commit to one evening per week as part of the programme. Cadets will also be encouraged to volunteer for additional activities as and when required, which may include crime prevention initiatives, police training events, community projects or specific festivals.”

He added: “It’s an excellent opportunity to gain important life-skills and knowledge about the Police, and the crucial service we provide to the members of our diverse communities in Powys.”

The second Volunteer Cadet Scheme will begin at the end of summer 2011. In order to apply you must be aged 16 upon the commencement of the scheme.
