A 60-year-old man has been arrested following a serious assault in Newtown.

The man was arrested after he arrived at Welsh Memorial Hospital with another man who had serious injuries to his body.

Police were called at 2pm yesterday to the hospital where medical staff were giving emergency treatment to the injured man.

Police said an initial incident occurred at Lon Helyg, Trehafren in Newtown and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

"Just before 2pm (Thursday, 26 November), a man arrived at Welshpool Memorial Hospital with injuries to the body," said a Dyfed Powys Police spokesperson.

"He was accompanied by another man, and police swiftly attended the site. The injured man received emergency treatment, and was subsequently taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"The safety of all at the hospital was the priority, and officers cordoned off the site whilst an investigation was commenced.

"A 60 year old man was arrested on suspicion of serious assault and has been conveyed to police custody. Police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident."

The spokesperson added: Officers are appealing to anyone who has information in respect of this incident, which occurred in the Lon Helyg area of Newtown initially, to contact them, either online at bit.ly/DPPContactOnline, by emailing 101@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk, or by calling 101."
