Local business owners are being urged to help cheer the town up in the lead up to Christmas as part of the town council's annual festive window competition.

The Mayor of Newtown, Cllr David Selby, has launched he competition which this year is titled 'A Cheerful Local Christmas.'

He said he hoped all local shops and businesses will take part in the competition to help brighten up the town and encourage local shoppers.

"The shop local message is vital for the health of town. Health, in that we don’t have to travel far to do every day and gift shopping and for the health of local businesses to stay open and to keep a vibrant town centre.

"Shrewsbury and other towns over the border are not open to us whilst the English lockdown continues. We have a variety of local businesses providing all of our food needs and a variety of gift shopping options. Let’s use them and enjoy a local Christmas."

He added: "I hope that local businesses will join in with the window competition, the Christmas Lights will be on at the end of the month and despite the difficulties we face we can have a colourful local Newtown Christmas.”

Judging will take place on Saturday, 28th November.
