Fly-tipping and litter remains a problem in town

Litter remains a problem in key public areas in Newtown, town councillors will be told.

The Covid-19 situation saw an increase in fly-tipping in town centre park ares, along the river and other locations.

A new policy for litter management is now being considered as part of the Open Newtown project and Newtown Town Council.

The town council's Services Committee will consider a report from the Open Newtown Ranger about the issues.

"We continue to clear regular fly tipping incidents, heightened during Covid when the HWRC was closed," said the report.

"We continue to collect the litter approximately twice a week, using Bike to the Future as our interim contractor who collect using the electric cargo bike.

"A new Policy for litter management is being drafted and will formthe basis of a specification and subsequent tendering process."

"Consideration is being given to collaboration with the Town Council on installing new bins –possibly bins that split landfill waste from recyclables –on key sites including the play Park, Skate Park and Urban Bike Park."
