Foster carers in Newtown have been praised for their work during the coronavirus situation.

A north Powys county councillor said foster carers in the county continued in the commitment to helping children and young people at what was a difficult time.

Councillor Amanda Jenner, who is the county councillor representative on the Powys Foster Panel, spoke of the tremendous care provided by Powys’ foster carers.

The Powys County Council Foster Panel has continued to hold regular remote meetings during the lockdown period and has seen new carers approved and annual reviews continued for existing Powys Foster Carers.

Councillor Jenner said: “I have been so impressed hearing of the level of care and commitment shown by Foster Carers in Powys during the Covid-19 pandemic period.

"These wonderful people look after some of our most vulnerable children in the county and over the last 6 months many of them have gone over and above, working endlessly with social workers, health and education professionals in order to ensure that the wellbeing of these young people is prioritised.

"Lockdown has not been easy for many of these young people and yet carers have continued to come up with creative and dedicated ways to support them. These Foster Carers really are an asset to Powys."

Cllr Jenner added: “Over the last few years Powys’ Children's Services has been on an improvement journey.

"From what I have seen on Powys’ Foster Panel, the high quality of care provided by Powys Foster Carers is a reflection of the progress made within the Children’s Department of Powys County Council and in particular, the improved and more consistent support they receive from the Powys Social Worker Foster Team.

"Yes there will always be more to do to continue improving, but it is extremely positive to see the culture within the department becoming one of reflection, teamwork and improved leadership.”
