More than 43,000 meals were eaten in Montgomeryshire during the government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme, it has been revealed.

Seventy-six restaurants took part in the area with the £250,000 claimed in discounts.

The average discount per meal was £5.83.

More than £13 million was claimed in discounts throughout Wales, with 2.307 million meals claimed among 2,957 restaurants.

The scheme aimed to help restaurants, pubs and other venues recover from the coronavirus lockdown and attract customers back out to spend money with them.

The scheme took place each Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday during August.

Throughout Mid and North Wales 775,000 diners ate meals and saved more than £4.5 million.

The UK Government has released a breakdown of the figures for each parliamentary constituency, with the scheme allowing diners to get up to £10 off a meal at participating restaurants on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Excluding chain restaurants with over 25 eateries, across Wales as a whole 2,957 venues took part in the scheme which saw just over £13m worth of discounts claimed for 2.3m meals – with the average discount being £5.66 per head.

The scheme allowed a 50% discount on food or non-alcoholic drinks to eat or drink in, up to a maximum of £10 discount per diner.

But with the figures only containing claims made up to midnight on August 27, and excluding major chain restaurants, the grand totals are likely to be higher.
