Public meeting to discuss climate declaration

02/09/2020 @ 07:23
An online public meeting is being organised to discuss the climate emergency declaration made by Powys County Council.

The Montgomeryshire Liberal Democrats will host the virtual public meeting on Wednesday, 9th September.

Councillors Jake Berriman and Jackie Charlton, who proposed the successful motion that calls for zero net carbon emissions by 2030, will lead the discussion.

The motion asks the Leader of the Council to name a cabinet portfolio holder responsible for leading on climate change mitigation, and to support the Local Electricity Bill.

Powys Public Service Board has started developing a plan to decarbonise the county and it is modelling a series of scenarios for the coming years that will guide the journey towards net-zero emissions.

The online public meeting will discuss what the motion means for individuals and businesses in Powys.

Cllr Berriman said: “Having now secured this historic vote to declare a climate emergency here in Powys, no further time can be wasted in pulling people together of all views and disciplines to make Powys the green heart of Wales.

“This is why, in addition to councillors of different political persuasions working side-by-side on this vitally important matter, the resolution passed also called for the establishment of a Powys-wide multi-stakeholder group - including businesses, farmers, community groups and interested individuals - to work alongside the public sector to establish a baseline for ‘our’ carbon consumption and explore ways in which we can collectively reduce, and off-set, our carbon emissions.

"No one believes or expects that Powys County Council can do this on its own, but the Council is ideally placed to bring us all together and to lead by example.”

Members of the public will have an opportunity to submit questions and ideas prior to and during the online event.

Residents and businesses can request to join the Zoom meeting that will take place at at 7.30pm by emailing secretary@montlibdems.org.uk.
