Extinction Rebellion plans Newtown protest

26/08/2020 @ 03:52
Global environmental movement, Extinction Rebellion, are planning a non-disruptive socially-distanced protest in Newtown on Bank Holiday Monday.

The group’s Newtown and Welshpool group have informed local authorities that they will be present in Broad Street around 1pm on Monday. They will be in Welshpool's High Street from 10am to 12 noon.

A group spokesperson said: “The premise is that activists will stand silently in a non-disruptive socially distanced formation, holding placards relating to the climate and ecological emergency. Plans are for the protest to move to Newtown later in the day.”

They added: “there’s always a need for more rebels” and if anyone would like to support they should message the group via their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/379826645954102/).

According to Wikipedia, Extinction Rebellion (abbreviated as XR) was established in May 2018 with the stated aim of using non-violent civil disobedience to compel government action to avoid tipping points in the climate system, biodiversity loss, and the risk of social and ecological collapse.
