Newtown Day Centre is likely to remain closed until February 2021 at the earliest.
Other days centres in Powys will also remain closed.
Powys County Council had said last week that the centres would remain closed until further guidance on social distancing.
But now it has emerged the council does not anticipate opening them for at least six months and “day time opportunities will continue to be provided in alternative ways” with their centres not expected to reopen until February 2021, at the earliest.
The approach has been made with Covid-19 still lingering in the area, and the unknown impact that the annual flu season may add to the current scenario this winter.
Cabinet Member with responsibility for Adult Social Care, Cllr Myfanwy Alexander, confirmed: “We are conscious that the inability to safely open previous provision at this time due to the current Covid-19 situation leaves service users and their families without opportunities they greatly valued.
"Therefore, we are contacting them to discuss possible safe alternative which could be undertaken in current circumstances based on their individual needs and preferences.”
Alternative arrangements have been put in place for people who previously attended day centres and services such as the provision of care at home, supported living and in some cases, family support. Some have chosen not to receive further support.
