Electric car charging could cost up to £20

It has emerged that it will cost electric car users around £20 "fill up" their cars at Powys County Council charging points in Newtown and Llanidloes.

The council launched its first charging points at Llanidloes this week with a fanfare after it agreed last year to introduce the car charging points across the county.

However, users will have to pay 25p per kWh of electricity on top of £4 for parking at the charging point.

MyNewtown understands a 60kWh electric car would cost around £19.85 in that period of time.

Yesterday, we reported how the first charging point was installed and switched on in Llanidloes.

Two more points capable of charging up to four cars at a time will be installed in Newtown's Back Lane car park shortly.

It followed a campaign last year after it emerged that there were almost no electric car charing points in Mid Wales available for public use.

That meant visitors or business people with electric or hybrid cars could not charge their vehicles if they were in the area.

With growing numbers of electric car users, that could affect people coming into the area to visit.

Most electric cars can travel up to around 250 miles on one charge.

Cllr Heulwen Hulme, cabinet member for the environment, added: “We are very excited that the first of our planned Powys wide network of electric charging points are now live and ready to use.

“Provided by the council for the benefit of residents and visitors, these new charging points will help to facilitate our transition to a low carbon future and provide more accessible charging facilities across the county.”

The electric vehicle charging project was funded by The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and Powys County Council and delivered in conjunction with Silverstone Green Energy. The charging points are all owned by the council and are on the Dragon Charging Network. Users will need an account with either Dragon Charging or Genie Point to access the connection.

Other charge points will be located at Back Lane Car Park, Newtown; Hereford Street Car Park, Presteigne, High Street Car Park, Llandrindod Wells, Groe Car Park, Builth Wells, and Watton Car Park, Brecon.
