Rail travellers return to the trains

17/08/2020 @ 12:12
Trains in Newtown and Caersws have been busier today after essential travel restrictions were lifted.

Travellers were reported using Transport for Wales services to Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth following several months of only being able to use the Cambrian Railway and other Welsh railway lines for essential use.

The difference between restrictions in rail use between England and Wales has caused some confusion with local travellers being turned away at weekends when trying to get to the coast, while some from England have managed to get through.

“The essential travel message was introduced to prioritise the travel of key workers, as well as those with no alternative mode of transport,” said a Welsh Government spokesperson.

“The lifting of the restrictions comes as the number of Coronavirus cases continues to fall. It is the latest in the Welsh Government’s step-by-step approach to making changes to coronavirus restrictions.

“The requirement to wear a face covering on public transport in Wales remains in place, although there are some exceptions such as being unable to wear one because of a physical or mental illness.

“But with the virus still in circulation it’s essential that people act responsibility when using public transport. This will involve planning journeys to avoid busy periods if possible, and washing or sanitising hands at the start and end of each trip.”
