Return to school dates announced

25/07/2020 @ 10:01
Powys County Council has set dates for staff to return and pupils in September after the closed in March because of the coronavirus situation.

The council said it is working with all its schools to ensure that all pupils will return safely after the summer holidays.

"Although approaches will vary among schools, all pupils will be able to resume full time education by September 14, in line with the recent Welsh Government announcement," said a council statement.

Following discussions with headteachers and teaching unions, the following arrangements for Powys schools will be:

01/09/20: Staff only day – Planning and preparation for the re-opening of schools following Coronavirus

02/09/20: Staff only day - Planning and preparation for the re-opening of schools following Coronavirus

03/09/20 – 11/09/20: Welcoming children and young people back to school, using a "phased return" approach with specific timetables designed for particular cohorts / years to return on different days.

Given the current position, the council believes that a "phased return" approach will be the most effective for the county, with each school aiming to welcome all children back to school by 10/09/20 or 11/09/20.

14/09/20: All schools open for all children.

Headteachers will contact parents or guardians with the specific details of their children’s school.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “I would like to thank headteachers and their staff for all of the planning work completed on short notice to ensure that we can welcome children and young people back to school following the summer holidays.

“I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe break and look forward to seeing children and young people returning to our schools in September.”
