Damage "beyond repair" at new play site

13/07/2020 @ 01:03
Damage beyond repair has been caused to fences and other equipment at the site of a new play facility in Newtown being created by Open Newtown.

The not-for-profit organisation, which is using public and Big Lottery funding to create the play area near the Town Hall grounds has aid children have entered the construction site over the weekend.

Officers say "children are spoiling it for themselves" and have urged anyone who sees anyone entering the site to call Newtown Police on 101.

"Children have been entering our construction sites this weekend, maybe not realising how much damage they’re causing," said a statement.

"Fence clamps have been removed, fencing panels have been damaged beyond repair. The construction sites have clear Keep Out signs. They are construction sites, with plant and equipment."

"It added: "Every time equipment is vandalised that’s less money we can spend on new play equipment.

"Every time equipment is vandalised then it’ll take longer to complete projects.

"Children are literally spoiling it for themselves."

The statement added: "Please talk to your children today. Tell them to stay out of construction sites. Explain to them the dangers that they might not realise are present. And please report incidents to the local police on 101."

The project is part of the wider Open Newtown project to open up green areas for recreation and other use throughout Newtown.
