Red telephone box could be saved for other use

One of the last red telephone boxes in the area could soon be put to community use.

The telephone box in Back Lane, Newtown, next to The Exchange, could be leased by the town council.

It follows the decision by BT to place a number of telephone boxes in the area up for alternative uses as part of a scheme allowing organisations and community councils to utilise them for alternative community uses.

In Montgomery a telephone box has been transformed into a tourist information facility, while in other towns defibrillators have been placed in them.

Newtown Town Council's Economy and Environment Committee will discuss the leasing of the phone box at its meeting on Monday.
