Campaigners launch survey into waste site

22/06/2020 @ 10:22
Campaigners against the waste transfer and business park at Abermule that is currently being built have urged local residents to get involved in a questionnaire about the site.

Despite work progressing, the Abermule Communities Together group has said it is worried about the future us of the site and business units on it.

They have published a questionnaire for residents and others to give their views.

The site is being developed by Powys County Council. It includes a recycling transfer station which will see recycled waste from throughout north Powys delivered to it before being packaged and sent off for recycling.

Business units are also being constructed on the site.

"Every day, we see the Waste Transfer Station growing before our eyes. The project was passed by just one vote by PCC who refused to listen to the real concerns of worried residents," said a statement by ACT on its survey website.

"Later, a final vote to proceed was put before all councillors and it was decided that Abermule was not the place for this activity. However, this was ignored by a Cabinet of just eight people and the ‘build’ commenced.

"This would seem to be an end to the matter; however the activities and scope of intended operations are continuing to expand and we see worrying and unwelcome developments exposed in a recently-rejected application for an Environmental Permit.

"ACT continue to monitor and challenge escalations in proposed activities, particularly in relation to the use of the remaining business units.

"We are also extremely concerned about recently exposed plans to bring putrefying, black bag, waste to our village — despite numerous assurances that this would NOT happen.

"To help us continue our work and best represent your views, please complete this short questionnaire. No personal information will be visible to us at any stage. All responses entered will be treated in strictest confidence and used solely for the purpose of conducting this survey."

The survey can be found here.
