Black Lives Matter 'doorstep' protest in Newtown

11/06/2020 @ 04:42
A Black Lives Matter doorstep protest is to be held online for Newtown residents, as well as a visual event of posters and signs in the town centre.

Organisers have set up a Facebook group to raise awareness of the BLM campaign and are urging people to create posters and signs showing solidarity with Black Lives Matter.

It follows the international protests following the death of George Floyd in the United States who died after a police officer knelt on his neck.

On Saturday between 10am and 12noon the signs and posters will be placed on the grounds surrounding the Oriel Davies Gallery in Back Lane when a photograph will be taken.

One of the organisers, Sophie Renshaw, said: "I created a Facebook page along with a few other local girls, which now has over 300 members (Black Lives Matters - Newtown, Powys). This a safe place where we can openly and respectfully discuss our opinions, experiences and how we can tackle these issues within our community in confidence.

"We are asking residents of Newtown and surrounding areas to show solidarity and stand with the 'Black Lives Matter’.

"Following our government guidelines, we encourage residents to show support to this cause by to participating in a 'doorstep protest.'

"We’ve asked those who which to show support to  make signs, banners and drawings and photograph yourself/your family outside their home  supporting this cause which will be used to create a slideshow at a later date.

"Participants have then been asked between 10am and 12noon to place their signs respectfully on the grounds of Oriel Davies Gallery, (taking into consideration the social distancing rules). For extra safety measures, we have recommended that individuals wear appropriate PPE (gloves, masks, hand sanitiser).

"A photo of the collective work will be taken at 12noon and anyone wishing to retrieve their work should do so before 1:00pm, ensuring the area is left clean and tidy."
