10-year schools strategy approved

A 10-year strategy will see Newtown's schools become among the best along those throughout Powys, says Powys County Council.

The Strategy for Transforming Education in the county was approved by Leader Cllr Rosemarie Harris under delegated powers in April, and will run through to 2030.

It is expected to streamline and modernise the education system throughout the county with the council establishing four work streams to deliver the strategic aims outlined in the strategy.

These are:

·      All-age schools and primaries

·      Post-16 provision

·      Welsh-medium provision

·      Additional Learning Needs provision

There will be some tough decisions to be made and some schools will close over the next decade, but senior councillors say these tough decisions will need to be made so that our next generations can compete in the fast changing world.

Cllr Phyl Davies, Cabinet Member for Education and Property, said: “Learning and skills is a cornerstone of our Vision 2025 and we want to provide a world-class rural education system that has learner entitlement at its core.

“To provide this world-class education system and achieve the aims in our strategy, we need to have the right arrangements in place to ensure that we can deliver the outcomes needed to transform the learner experience and entitlement for our young people.

“We are committed to giving our learners, who will be at the heart of all our decisions, the best possible start they deserve.”
