Community groups, organisations and charities helping residents during the Covid-19 crisis in Newtown have received £10,000 grant funding from the town council.

The Newtown Community Fund presents money each year to support projects or community activity through community, voluntary or self- help groups. The grant traditionally supports groups which carry out work in the community

However, in the first round of funding this year the town council has focussed on groups that are working in the community and assisting with the "repercussions" of Covid-19.

The successful applicants received a total of £10,000 for the May Community Grants Awards as follows: Maldwyn Nursery and Family Centre, Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre, Newtown Community Cafe, Newtown Sports and Social Club, Ponthafren Association, Powys Animal Welfare, Robert Owen Memorial Museum, RBD Dance Academy and 1st Newtown Scout Group.

Mayor Cllr David Selby, said: “Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council congratulates the successful applicants. It is hoped that a grant award presentation will be held in early 2021 where applicants will be invited to receive a certificate and meet other organisations within the town”

Town Clerk Mr E Humphreys, added: “One of the roles of a town council is to enable others to do things. The community fund grants do precisely that, and through this fund we see the town council helping the community to help itself”.

The Community Fund Grant had the same criteria as always with the exception that:

a) for May 2020 grants only, a maximum of £2,000 will be permitted to support the community response to mitigate the effects of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

b) exception that, for May 2020 grants only, previous applicants will be permitted in Round 1 which support the community response to mitigate the effects of the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The next available opportunity to apply for the Newtown Community Fund will be at the end of September for the consideration in October.
