A motorist stopped by police in Llanidloes smelling of cannabis sped off and reached speeds of 140mph before reaching the M6 and being forced off the road.

Three forces were involved in the operation to stop the driver who was stopped as part of a routine check in Llanidloes. The local police officer smelt cannabis but the driver sped off, according to Newtown Police.

The car was spotted close to the border with England after using back roads. It was then chased before heading to the M6 where it was stopped "using tactics" after reaching speeds of 140mph.

In a tweet, Newtown's road traffic police said: "Great work between 3 forces, @OPUShropshire @WMPolice. Strong smell of cannabis coming from vehicle in Llanidloes made off from local PC. Located by 501 near border on back roads. Drove at 140mph to try and get away. Stopped on M6 with tactics. 1 in custody."

Meanwhile, two people are in custody after a car was stopped on the Newtown bypass and caught in possession of Class A and B drugs.

"Officers carrying out checks on Newtown bypass under COVID guidelines. 2 in custody, possession of class A and B. Driver provided positive drug wipe! #ProtectTheNHS #Covid19UK," said the tweet last night.
