Parents must prove kids need school hub

To ensure the emergency school hub system is not being abused, parents will need to prove that there is no-one home to care for their children.

From today (Friday), schools in Powys are closed with just 13 sites remaining open becoming childcare hubs to look after only the most vulnerable and the children of key workers.

Cllr Elwyn Vaughan has told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that he has spoken with school staff that have concerns.

He has now brought these to the attention of education portfolio holder, Cllr Phyl Davies who has swiftly addressed them.

Cllr Vaughan explained: “These concerns fall into two categories. The first one is whether the children are being dropped off at school when they could be looked after at home where perhaps adults remain.

“To address this it has been suggested that parents produce some evidence that they are at work.

“The second concern is about cross infection. The schools that are to remain open as childcare hubs, need to have thermometers so that they can test everyone’s temperatures, staff and children.”

According to Cllr Phyl Davies, numbers for children at school in Powys had dropped this week to below 200, Guilsfield has just one pupil who produced the pictured rainbow to put a smile on villegers’ faces.

Cllr Davies added that all hubs will have a thermometer that you point at someone’s head to obtain a temperature.

He added: “When parents are registering their kids for this childcare we are assessing the key worker entitlement and challenging it!”

Cllr Vaughan thanked Cllr Davies for his positive reaction.

“I hope these practical measures go some way to soothe staff worries,” added Cllr Vaughan.

The hubs, which will provide childcare to support critical emergency workers, NHS staff and social care workers as well as the county’s most vulnerable children, will also operate daily from 8am to 6pm including weekends.

The emergency childcare hubs are based in:

Brecon – Priory C. in W. School, Brecon

Builth Wells – Newbridge-on-Wye C. in W. School

Crickhowell – Crickhowell C.P. School

Gwernyfed – Archdeacon Griffiths C. in W. (A) School, Llyswen
