Following Prime Minister Boris Johnsons’s announcement that the UK will go into lockdown to combat coronavirus. Powys County Council’s (PCC) cabinet meeting has been cancelled.

The cabinet were originally supposed to meet at 10.30am today (Tuesday, 24 March).

But during Monday, March 23, the meeting notification in the PCC calendar changed to say that it had been pushed back to 11.45am

On Monday evening at 8.30pm, Mr Johnson, addressed the nation to announce the stricter guidelines that will see the UK go into lock-down, for the next three weeks.

In Wales, Welsh Government First Minister Mark Drakeford, confirmed the measures.

At 9.24pm, the  cabinet meeting cancellation messages were received through email.

The notification also says that the council leader, Cllr Rosemarie Harris will be taking part in a conference call with other Welsh Council leaders.

Cllr Harris said in a statement on social media: “I hope you are keeping well and have access to the food and medicine at this rather difficult unprecedented time.”

Cllr Harris explained that the council would now be concentrating on providing essential services which includes Adult and Children’s Social Services.

She added that the authority was in constant touch with Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) and the Welsh Government.

Cllr Harris added: “I would like to thank all those in our communities who have helped so much, lots of people, we appreciate it.

“Look after yourselves and take the advice offered nationally, keep safe.”
The agenda for the meeting would have seen a decision made to take the North Powys well-being programme model of care to the next stage.

The schools major improvement programme which gives money to repair and refurbish schools would have been decided and the 2019/20 budget situation would have been discussed.

Also an exempt item would have discussed the continuation of extending the interim leadership arrangements in the education service.

This would see interim chief education officer, Lynette Lovel continue in her role as the service looks to address the recommendations of a highly critical Estyn inspection.
