Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams has spoken to the Home Secretary and also called No 10 to intervene as tourists flooded into the Newtown area over the weekend.
The roads throughout the area were busy with tourists travelling to locations including Llyn Clywedog, Hafren and the coast.
It has incensed the local population with Craig saying that reports had reached him from hotel and caravan site owners about the increased number of people checking in following the Government’s advice to stay indoors.
After his conversations with London, he said he was pleased to hear that the Government is considering tougher measures to prevent people flocking to tourist destinations to avoid COVID-19.
“While I would normally welcome increased numbers of tourists to Montgomeryshire, there is a real risk that increased numbers of travellers to the area risks putting extra pressure on our vital services and supermarkets which are already working extremely hard to meet the challenge of COVID-19,” he said. “I urge all those considering traveling to seriously reconsider.
“Follow the Government’s advice, stay at home and avoid all but essential travel. Beating this virus is a national effort, and it will be beaten if we work together and follow the advice coming from the Prime Minister, Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientific adviser, and others.”
