Doctor hits out at "irresponsible" rumours

A Newtown doctor has hit out at “irresponsible” rumours claiming Newtown Medical Centre was closed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Dr Alan Porter has reiterated that the medical centre in Park Street will be open as usual next week, despite rumours that it was closed.

He said the rumours had led to key medical staff being taken off their core duties to handle an influx of patients in recent days.

He said: "Newtown Surgery will be open for business as usual next week. Unfortunately an irresponsible individual started a rumour that the surgery was closed due to Coronavirus - I can categorically say that this is not based on any fact.

"This resulted in panicking patients turning up in droves this (Friday) afternoon asking for prescription renewal. Staff had to be taken from clinical duties to help the overwhelming workload in the dispensary- less than ideal.

"All practices will be working under considerable duress in the coming weeks. It will be hard enough without idiots starting unfounded rumours."
