Climate change talks to be held in Newtown

12/03/2020 @ 07:10
A series of talks aimed at helping unravel confusion about climate change are to be held in Newtown.

Open Newtown, a not-for-profit community enterprise, is hosting a series of talks in partnership with Newtown High School to help unravel the confusion around climate change.

This month’s talk, on Thursday, 19 March, starting at 7.30pm, is about carbon and land use.

Dr Richard Kipling, from The Aberystwyth University Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), will speak about how the management and use of land alters the amount of carbon locked in the soil and vegetation.

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) published a major report on “Climate Change and Land” in the autumn of 2019 and land management is seen as a significant factor in the control of global CO2 emissions.

Dr Kipling will discuss his work in this area under the title “Carbon, Public Goods and Farming: Challenges and opportunities in future land use.”

The talk is free, open to anyone and will be held in Newtown High School.

A free talk about the role that co-operatives could play in making houses more energy efficient and fit for 2050 is also being held at Newtown Enterprise Hub (top of the Pryce Jones building) on Tuesday, 17 March at 6pm.

This event, organised by Wales Cooperative Centre, is titled ‘Community housing enabler: empty homes and eco-renovation’. Anyone interested in energy efficient housing and cooperatives is welcome to attend but needs to book via Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/ - search for “community housing” in Newtown.

The Open Newtown talks are being supported by ARWAIN; the Regional Development Plan for Powys administered by Powys County Council.
