Coronavirus testing arrangements are in place locally

Testing arrangements in Newtown for Coronavirus are in place as they are throughout the county, according to health chiefs.

With the seeming inevitability that someone in Powys will catch the coronavirus, Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) say they have local testing arrangements in place for those at risk.

PTHB have now issued advice on the virus officially called  Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19),

PTHB  Director of Public Health, Stuart Bourne, said: “We are working closely with Public Health Wales and wider partners to monitor coronavirus and to implement plans to respond.

“Locally, our plans have already included putting in place testing arrangements so that people can be tested quickly and conveniently if they are assessed as being at risk of contracting

“If someone is diagnosed with coronavirus then they will be assessed and treated on a case by case basis and managed in an appropriate setting depending on their needs.”

Mr Bourne said that they  encourage people to check the updated advice for returning travellers

This now includes guidance for people returning from Italy, China, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Iran.

Mr Bourne added: “Members of the public can help protect themselves and others by always carrying tissues, and using them to catch coughs or sneezes.

“They should bin the tissue, and to kill the germs, wash their hands with soap and water, or use a sanitiser gel.

“This is the best way to slow the spread of most germs.

The number of cases in Wales stands at 15.

Just over the border in England, a case has been confirmed in Shropshire and also one in Herefordshire.

More information is available from the Public Health Wales website at phw.nhs.wales/coronavirus, and a new symptom checker has also been launched on the NHS Direct Wales website.
