Rumours and speculation of a stabbing in Newtown have been dismissed by police.

For the past few days speculation had mounted over an incident in the town centre.

However, police have issued a statement saying they believe the rumours have stemmed from a sudden death of an elderly man who had fallen and sustained a head injury.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesperson said: “We are aware of speculation in Newtown relating to the rumoured fatal stabbing of a man in the town in the past week. We can reassure the public that there has been no such incident in Newtown.

"We believe this to be a misunderstanding related to the sudden death of an elderly man in St Mary’s Close on the evening of Sunday 16 February. The 82 year old man had been found at the location by members of the public, with a head injury. Paramedics attended, and confirmed that the man had a head injury consistent with him having fallen. Sadly he was pronounced dead in the ambulance.

"Members of his family were informed, as was HM Coroner. Officers conducted enquiries on behalf of the Coroner, and there are not believed to be suspicious circumstances.”
