Full rail services resume to the coast

21/02/2020 @ 01:15
The Cambrian Railway is now fully open from Newtown to Aberystwyth, as well as Shrewsbury.

Network Rail said work to repair tracks along the coastal sections between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth and Pwllheli had been completed following Storms Ciara and Dennis over the past two weeks.

Bus services had been operating between Machynlleth and the coast.

Bill Kelly, Network Rail’s route director for Wales and Borders said: “Storm Dennis and Storm Ciara hit the rail network hard here in Wales and we have just experienced another 24-hours of significant rain, which has fallen onto ground that is already saturated. We have had teams at our sites working around the clock to make the repairs needed.

“We have made very good progress, despite the weather, and we will continue this work to get those affected lines reopened as quickly and as safely as possible.

“I thank passengers for their patience and understanding during this difficult period.”

Heavy rain is expected today and over the weekend which could see some flooding return to the area, although it is not expected to affect rail services on the Cambrian Railway.
