Cadets climb three times higher than Snowdon

Police cadets from Newtown have been overcoming personal fears as part of a fundraising attempt.

Staff and cadets from Newtown Volunteer Police Cadets unit set their sights high during a visit to Shrewsbury's Climb the Walls centre.

"As part of fundraising effort and with the kind support of Climb the Walls Shrewsbury they attempted a challenge that would see many of them overcome personal fears. The challenge was to climb the height of Everest," said PC Andrew Buckley of Newtown Police.
 
"The challenge is part of a larger project to raise funds to support the cadets taking part in the International Police Cadet Exchange to Calvert County.

"Following a successful trip in 2018 and the Americans visit to us in 2019 the exchange is evolving in to a permanent fixture in the cadets calendar."

PC Buckley added: "Many of the cadets had limited experience of climbing and a few had a fear of heights. With only an hour to climb the cadets made impressive progress towards their goal of 8849m.

"In the end after a valiant hours climb they totalled 3610 m (three times the height of Snowdon). Every cadet involved in the challenge showed grit and determination in their efforts."

The cadets included Cdt Millie Jones, Cdt Hannah Bowker, Cdt Scott Davies, Cdt Chris Jones, Cdt Ethan Bowen, Cdt Sion Hyde, Cdt Dillion Worley-Morgan, Cdt Tomas Chick, Cdt Cheyenne Kirby, Cdt Amber Tait and Cdt Mia Fitzgerald.

The staff involved were PC Andy Buckley (climbing), PCSO Graham Jennings, and adult volunteers Yas Bell and Charlotte Bowen.
